The Twin County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, on recommendation from its Smoke on the Mountain Committee, voted on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 to cancel Smoke on the Mountain for the 2020 year due to Covid-19 community health concerns.“The health and safety of our community and guests are at the forefront of our minds. With the uncertain future as to when the Covid-19 pandemic will subside, we are confident that the best decision was to cancel the 2020 event,” said Greg Pearson, Vice-President of the Chamber Board.
“For the past 15 years, the Smoke on the Mountain Barbecue Championship has been a successful community event. Showcasing not only the City of Galax, but also the Twin Counties as well, Smoke on the Mountain brings in tourist revenue to our local businesses and provides a weekend of family entertainment. With the uncertainty of future travel restrictions, social distancing, and crowd size restrictions due to the pandemic, the committee determined the prudent course of action was not to commit the resources for this year’s event and to concentrate our efforts on preparing for a bigger and more successful Smoke on the Mountain 2021,” said Michael Stevens, Co-Chair of Smoke on the Mountain.“We hope to make 2021 a Smoke on the Mountain to remember with increased activities, vendors, and entertainment.
The Twin County community can look forward to 2021 Smoke on the Mountain to bring us all back together for our shared love of barbecue,” said Jason Baumgardner, Co-Chair of Smoke on the Mountain. The Smoke on the Mountain Committee of the Chamber is composed of community members, Chamber Members, and Board Members of the organization.
