The Galax Leaf
The Galax Leaf, for which the City of Galax, Virginia was named, grows in the mountainous regions around Galax near the Blue Ridge Parkway. The heart-shaped leaf, growing from it's own stem, each root sending up from five to eight leaves, forms a carpet of waxy green in summer and rich bronze in winter.
The word galax is derived from the Greek word, gala, meaning milk and the bloom of the plant resembles a stream of milk.
These leaves are a favorite foliage in the fresh and dried arrangements and are used extensively by florists all over the country.
This native plant has played an important part in the economy of the Galax Area.
